Snake 31 The road bordered Snake to Heller Bar
Geologically speaking, one should note that here the canyon is composed of Basalt, layered, from the immense lava floods that built up the easter WA and OR plateaus to a depth of more than a mile. At Heller Bar and the end of the road (and this is WHY the road ends/could not continue), one hits an abrubt transition into solid GRANITE (see picture 27), a much harder and more ancient material, thus steeper walls. Note NO layering in the granite.
