The access road (and my shadow again). Everything is defined by the strength of the substrate. Where it is soft it is eroded, crumbling and flattening. Where it is solid it is vertical. The soft clay here is exactly why there is a break in the canyon wall that allows the easy gradient road in to the water at Lee's Ferry site.
