In a 10 hour day on the river, the walls invite exploration. We had parked the boat to eat lunch where a small rainfall wash and potential waterfall could be traced down from the heights. It looked like there might be small cave, so I hiked up the wash and found this inscription, "F G Faatz, NOV 16 1892". I talked to rangers and guides and no one knew anything about it. Finally found someone who did. It seems that FG FAATZ inscriptions have also been found deep in Zion and Bryce Canyons also in 1892 and 1893. As one of the earliest pioneer/tourists, F.G. really got around.
But this is an example of what is available to be found if one simply looks.
